I vividly recall picking up an album at Main Music in Springfield, Massachusetts by a group called The Blues Project in the mid 1960's. It was taking a chance in those days as $2.50 was a good deal of money to a kid from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Lest there be any doubt as to the outcome of that gamble, everything that Al Kooper put to vinyl in subsequent years found it's way into my collection. Kooper and Danny Kalb played mean, mean blues, and reading the story of how and when that music was taken from ideas to recordings was fascinating. Al Kooper, in spite of himself on occasion, was certainly deserving of Hall of Fame status and remains a model for blues aficionados to this day. It was somewhat disappointing that the book stopped abruptly as I would be interested in the years following 2000. The style of the narrative must match Kooper's conversational manner as it feels like the reader is sitting across the sofa from him. Not a literary masterpiece by any means, this book is still loads of fun, and very informative in terms of the the inner workings of the record business way back when. I would recommend it without hesitation for those old timers who recall good rock' n' roll, terrific blues...and the personalities that brought them to you.
