It’s Me Chelsea and Artie Lange’s Too Fat to Fish, you’ll love The Bedwetter.

Ms. Silverman was born and raised in New Hampshire. I was born and raised next door in the state of Maine. That practically makes us brother and sister. Much like my views on Tina Fey, I’m not exactly an ardent Sarah Silverman fan but have found some of her material amusing and insightful. Ms. Fey’s 2011 memoir ‘Bossypants’ was a real joy to read, so I was hoping for the same with 2010 ‘The Bedwetter.’If you believe religion, sexuality, racism, and the intimate parts of our bodies should be delicately addressed, then do not even bother opening ‘The Bedwetter.’ Ms. Silverman is no Nancy Reagan. The book has a generous amount of photos including a close-up shot of a guy’s anaconda and another of a woman’s Hindenburgs. The memoir starts off well but the author appears to lose steam by the middle of the thing. Her chapter on reviewing her old diaries was mind-numbingly boring. She acknowledges that writing the book was more difficult than she had envisioned. I think it shows. Ms. Silverman’s humor reminds me of her close friend’s style, Louie C.K. ‘The Bedwetter’ was published in 2010, seven years before Louie C.K.’s choking-the-chicken troubles. The author’s episodes involving C.K. show why she has stood by him and still loves the guy. The comedian also frequently reminds the reader that she is Jewish and tries, in her unique way, to explain the challenges in being one. Like Tina Fey her delivery is self-deprecating. There is profanity but not excessive in my opinion. She is to be commended for being so open about her struggles with depression. Other issues she addresses include such things as attending summer camp while being a bedwetter; her grandparents and parents; losing her virginity; becoming a vegetarian; moving to New York City; working briefly for Saturday Night Live; blowback about some of her comedic material; working with Garry Shandling; the writers she work alongside on The Sarah Silverman Program, and her frequent struggles with television executives on censorship. The author presents herself as an occasionally reckless, crude Pollyanna. It’s an odd mixture and probably one of the reasons for her appeal.Ms. Silverman’s memoir does maintain a somewhat orderly manner but a lot of stuff was left out that would have interested me such as how she got a talent agent and more details about how her career evolved. ‘The Bedwetter’ is a mixture of sad, disturbing, uncomfortable, and amusing. Tina Fey’s memoir was better organized, not as edgy, and much less scatological. Overall I was disappointed in ‘The Bedwetter.’ Fortunately it was a quick read.
