A Pim County Public Library Southwest Books of the Year 2021A True West Reader’s Choice for Best 2020 Western NonfictionThe little-known story of how a young Wyatt Earp, aided by his brothers, defeated the Cowboys, the Old West’s biggest outlaw gang.Wyatt Earp is regarded as the most famous lawman of the Old West, best known for his role in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona. But the story of his two-year war with a band of outlaws known as the Cowboys has never been told in full. The Cowboys were the largest outlaw gang in the history of the American West. After battles with the law in Texas and New Mexico, they shifted their operations to Arizona. There, led by Curly Bill Brocius, they ruled the border, robbing, rustling, smuggling and killing with impunity until they made the fatal mistake of tangling with the Earp brothers.Drawing on groundbreaking research into territorial and federal government records, John Boessenecker’s Ride the Devil’s Herd reveals a time and place in which homicide rates were fifty times higher than those today. The story still bears surprising relevance for contemporary America, involving hot-button issues such as gang violence, border security, unlawful immigration, the dangers of political propagandists parading as journalists, and the prosecution of police officers for carrying out their official duties. Wyatt Earp saw it all in Tombstone.

The book is filled with detail and gives a real picture of how wild the west really was in the years around 1880. Stage robberies and shooting in saloons and stores are in abundance but you get overwhelmed with detail. When he tells you at page 200 that some guy is in jail for a shooting, it is likely that the shooting was described about 100 pages before and you will wonder which one it was. He describes locations and geography in great detail but does not provide a single map. At about page 75 I finally made some copies out of Rand McNally in order to keep up. He describes the streets in Tombstone and the ok corral gunfight but not a single drawing or modest map to help you. I had to go to the internet. Most frustrating - there a pictures of men throughout but he and his publishers could not bring themselves to provide a simple index. Again, at page 200 if you are wondering what that guy looked like you will need to go back page by page to find the picture. How hard is it to index the pictures? All of this made for an unnecessarily difficult read. Foolish and frustrating.
